On October 27, 2009, the National Chamber Foundation, in partnership with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Institute for 21st Century Energy, hosted a CEO Leadership Series luncheon featuring John S. Watson, vice chairman of the board of directors of Chevron Corporation.

Watson discussed the importance of energy security to the long-term stability and success of the U.S. economy. He also described major challenges to the global economy stemming from the need to supply reliable and affordable energy to meet expected long-term growth.

Watson has been vice chairman of the board of Chevron since April 1 2009. On September 30, 2009 Chevron announced that Watson would succeed David J. O’Reilly as chairman of the board of directors and chief executive officer on December 31, 2009. Watson joined Chevron in 1980 as a financial analyst. He held financial, analytical and supervisory positions before being elected vice president of the corporation with responsibility for strategic planning and mergers and acquisitions. In 2001, he led the company’s integration effort following the Chevron-Texaco merger and then became the corporation’s chief financial officer. In 2005, he was elected president of Chevron International Exploration and Production, with responsibility for the company’s exploration and production activities outside North America.

A native of California, Watson earned a bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics from the University of California at Davis and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Chicago.
